Perfect Peaches

August 30, 2010

Do you remember the last time you had a fresh, ripe, juicy peach that dripped down your chin and fingers as you ate it? August is the month when peaches are in their prime and I have two favorite places that make the most of peach season.

Available only as long as the peaches are, Marie Callendar’s makes the most delectable Fresh Peach Pie. I don’t know how they do it, but this is the most consistently delicious pie in all the world. Somehow Marie procures only the very best peaches that are perfectly ripe and ready to devour. Then she folds them into a sweet, peachy glaze and piles them high in a flaky pie crust before covering them all in a blanket of whipped cream. Last year I let the summer get away from me and by the time I stopped by Marie’s for a peach pie they were all gone. I frantically called all the stores in Orange County hoping they might have one last pie, but to my dismay none did. That weekend I went to a BBQ in LA and would you believe that someone brought a Marie Callendar’s Fresh Peach Pie? I was ecstatic and waited patiently for dessert time. After I helped clean up dinner I strode over the dessert table to finally enjoy my piece of pie – and the whole thing was gone! Apparently I’m not the only one who loves fresh peach pie. Naturally I was devastated and vowed to never go another summer without.

My other scrumptious peach recommendation is a newly found Peach Milkshake from Chick-Fil-A. I drove through the other night and saw a small sign on the drive thru menu that said “peach milkshakes back by popular demand for a limited time only.” The marketing certainly worked because I ordered one with my meal. And boy was I glad I did! The milkshake has itty chunks of REAL peaches in it. So many that at least one comes through the straw with every suck. And miraculously the peaches are chopped so tiny that they can actually make it through the straw. I’m so happy to have yet another addiction to look forward to each August…
